He wouldn’t be a famous athlete if he didn’t get embroiled in a messy family law problem. In this case that famous athlete is Dennis Rodman, declaring himself broke when asked to pay spousal support and child support in arrears, reports ESPN.
Rodman, the former Detroit Pistons, Chicago Bulls, and Los Angeles Lakers star, and Hall of Famer, who is now in his early 50’s, owes nearly a million dollars in unpaid child support — $800,000 to be exact. And beyond Dennis Rodman’s child support arrears there is another $50,000 in unpaid spousal support.
He faces up to 20 days in jail for not paying, says ESPN.
Rodman's representatives allege that he is broke and an alcoholic and simply cannot pay. His finance manager puts his problem in perspective:
"In all honesty, Dennis, although a very sweet person, is an alcoholic."
In response to Dennis Rodman's inabilty to pay support, his ex-wife, Michelle Rodman, alleges that Rodman flies all over the world hosting nightclub gigs and is not in fact broke.
Dennis Rodman's child support problems are likely going to get worse before they get better. Fact is, he should have tried to child support modification a long time ago. Even if he is able to show that he couldn't ever again pay those child support arrears, they are likely going to stick with him for a considerable period of time. Courts are generally not in favor of simply waiving them away.
